If a computer doesn't work, what do I do?
Walking away from the machine means that the next person will have the same problem. Always report the problem to your teacher or Librarian, who will fill in a report for IT Services.
I need to work on a computer but the computer room has a class in it.
Most staff will let you use a spare computer. Work quietly and do not interrupt the class.
Can I save my work on the computer system?
Yes, once you have set up a Student Accoun you can then save to a temporary storage which is not backed up. Use a USB memory stick to transport/store files.
If it's on the internet can I just use it copyright free?
Almost everything created privately and originally is copyrighted and protected whether it has a notice or not.
You should assume that other people's works are copyrighted and may not be copied unless you know otherwise.
What can I do about protecting myself from computer viruses?
All EG TAFE PCs have virus checking software. To minimise your own risk, you should have an up to date virus checking program on your computer at home.
Do I need a computer at home in order to study?
Having a computer at home isn’t required for study but it can make life easier. For those of you without access to a computer at home, you can access our Flexible Learning Centres in Bairnsdale and Sale, which are open during the evening and at weekends.
Can I use a computer during the day when I am not in class?
There are computers available in Institute libraries for you to use to assist your studies. It is also sometimes possible to use spare computers in computer rooms even when classes are in progress. Please note, however, that this is at the teacher’s discretion as there are times when it would be inappropriate (eg in the middle of a test, for example). Teachers and students will expect you to work quietly.
What software does EG TAFE use?
Our student system includes software for specialised courses as well as:
- Microsoft Office XP and Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
- Internet Explorer
I don’t have the same software at home. Is this going to be a problem?
Most skills you will learn transfer between versions of the same software package. There may be issues if you take the data home, work on it, then bring it back to the Institute. Check with your teacher.
Can I store my data on the network?
Yes. Once you have created a Student Account you can save up to 20Mb of your work on the network. Note that the storage is only temporary and is not backed up. You are expected to make other arrangements for permanent storage eg take the work home, use a memory stick, email your work to yourself.
Can I access my work stored at EG TAFE when I am at home?
No – you will need to take work home via floppy disks or a USB memory stick.
Can I access the internet at EG TAFE?
Yes. Once you have created a student account you will be able to access the internet. There are rules regarding internet access which you should read and follow.
Can I send teachers my assessment tasks by email?
Most teachers will accept emailed assessment tasks. Ask your teacher directly.
Can I receive email at EG TAFE?
Many students set up a Hotmail account, which can be accessed via the internet.
How do I get assistance with computer related problems?
It all depends what the problem is. As a general guide:
